Building an Informative Portal For Buddhist Devotees

The client envisaged the creation of a full-fledged website with a vision to showcase and promote India as a prominent Buddhist destination and to provide easy access to information related to Buddhism in India.

The primary audience of this website were Buddhist pilgrims, monks, and tourists, and the website was expected to cover around 100+ Buddhist destinations and attractions across India.

The challenge facing us was the collection of data about the 100+ Buddhist monasteries. It required extensive research into the subject, in order to list the destinations and locations on the website, based on their prominence.

A study on Buddhism, its history, facts, and current form was needed to make the website up-to-date and to contain relevant information. Another challenge facing us was to make the website both interactive and informative at the same time. The website had to be designed keeping in mind the target audience and to comply with their aesthetics in mind.

As part of the solution, we created a dynamic website dedicated to Buddhism, wherein we designed it in a way to promote Buddhism and to cover all information related to Buddhism under different heads. We created a visually rich homepage for the website and followed it up with pages containing information about Buddhism. We divided the pages into the five main heads on the website-

  1. About Buddhism- This section contained information about the advent of Buddhism, its growth, and its current state. It is aimed at telling the story of Buddha and his journey along with the message he wanted to spread.
  2. Footsteps of Buddha- This section covers the eight ‘Sacred Sites’ related to the life of Buddha. An overview is provided here, and the users can further dig in and read more about them in detail.
  3. Buddhist Heritage: The third section contains details about the various revered Buddhist sites which spread the message of Buddha across the length of the country. A clean navigation experience makes finding information about these heritage sites easier as per the Indian states they’re found in.
  4. Monasteries- Following up with the previous one, this section lists information about the different monasteries related to Buddhism that are found in India.
  5. Blog – The ‘Blog’ section aggregates blogs, articles, facts on Buddhist destinations, attractions, and other literature related to Buddhism.

Apart from this, we added an ‘Events’ section which covers festivals and events and provides an overview of the names and dates of these festivals. By using Google Maps, we listed down all the locations of importance on a map, allowing people to seek directions on a map. Making the website more social, we added a social feed that fetches and displays user-generated content on Buddhism across all major social media platforms.

The website we created proved to be a success, with a total visitor count of 1,739,497 with 94.6 % of those coming from mobile devices. Some interesting metrics associated with the website are as follows-

  1. Average time spent on the site per day- 3 minutes 24 seconds
  2. Total page views – 2,098,441
  3. Unique visitors per day- 1,431,639
